The article presents the circumstances of the emergence of the first independent ecclesiastical organisation in the land of the Poles. It emphasises that the act of establishing the bishopric of Poznań gave Jordan the canonically inviolable status of a diocesan bishop and at the same time of a papal suffragan in the absence of a metropolis on Polish soil. The canonically established bishopric-diocese was a sufficient guarantee of ecclesiastical independence from a foreign metropolitan, even in the event of Poland's political dependence on Emperor Otto I.
