A scientific session organized on the occasion of the 725th anniversary of the founding of the Cistercian abbey in Pelplin, which took place on September 21-23, 2001, was devoted to examining the culture-forming role of the Cistercians in Kociewie. It was the sixth major scientific conference devoted to the history and culture of this order in Poland and Central Europe. The meeting aimed to explore the history of individual Cistercian monasteries, especially in Poland, Silesia and the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Despite many conferences and scientific meetings devoted to this order, there is still a need to better understand its role and influence on the culture of the region. The session in Pelplin was organized, among others, by the District Office in Tczew, the Institute of History of the University of Gdańsk and the Major Seminary and Collegium Marianum in Pelplin, and was attended by representatives of local administrative and church authorities. The event also aimed to maintain society's historical awareness in the face of globalization and the decreasing level of knowledge about history. By combining a scientific session with various accompanying events, the organizers tried to show the authentic historical roots and culture of past generations that shaped life in the region, especially in the times of Cistercian activity. The aim was also to preserve the memory of the rich past and tradition of the Cistercians for future generations.
