Abstract

The manuscript, which has not been previously considered by historians and dates back a hundred years, is kept in the Diocesan Archives in Görlitz. Written by Ewald Freiherr von Kleist, this work, titled "Das Bisthum Breslau in kirchlichen und politischen Beziehungen", was completed in 1902. The author, a priest of the Wrocław diocese, was a religion teacher at the renowned St. Maciej in Wrocław. His work had no formal qualifications as a historian, nor was it published. Kleist described the history of the diocese from the time of its establishment in 1000 to the pontificate of Bishop H. Forster in the second half of the 19th century. The narrative was arranged logically, based on the periods of rule of subsequent bishops of the Wrocław diocese. The author gives exact dates of many events, but there are very few footnotes. Kleist's work was not published, which may suggest that it was material prepared for his own use. Although this manuscript is no longer used in research on the history of the Wrocław diocese, it is a valuable source for understanding the process of creating a historical narrative on this subject.
