Study on the history of the chapter and collegiate church of St Margaret in Nowy Sącz in the years 1448-1791 led to the preparation of the first catalog of church dignitaries of the Sądecczyzna and Podhale region. The catalog includes clergy, prelates and canons of the Nowy Sącz chapter whose activities were recorded in ecclesiastical and secular archival sources. The collegiate chapter in Nowy Sącz was founded by Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki in 1448 and initially consisted of four prelates and four canons. Later, the foundations of Fr. Jacek Śliwski and the Bishop of Krakow, Michał Oborski, expanded the number of prelatures and canons. In the 18th century, the chapter included seven prelates, six general canons and honorary canons. Archival research allowed the identification of 224 clergy who belonged to the chapter during the 343 years of its existence. Many of them had other benefices apart from the prelature or canonry in Nowy Sącz, as well as doctoral degrees and were associated with the University of Krakow. It should be emphasized that among the members of the chapter of St. Małgorzata in Nowy Sącz produced seven bishops of the Kraków diocese and many held important functions at the royal court or in the episcopal curia. All this information proves the importance and contribution of clergy associated with the chapter of St. Małgorzata in Nowy Sącz into the history of the region, Poland and the Church.
