Abstract

The pictorial legend of St Hedwig is part of the Lubin Codex drawn up for Prince Louis I of Silesia in 1353. Under the influence of the Cistercians, the life of the Piast patroness was decorated with additional religious motifs. Hedwig's virtues, humility and submission to God's will are compared to the virtues of the Virgin Mary, shown especially in the scene of the Annunciation. It is said that the Savior gave his blessing to Hedwig and spoke to her from the Cross, just as he did to Saint. Bernard of Clairvaux, St Gertrude (Cistercian) and St Franciszek. All these stories are presented in the Pictorial Life of the Saint. The statue of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus has become an indispensable attribute of Saint. Jadwiga, which was extremely rare in the Middle Ages. It first appeared in the Lubin Codex. The fact that hagiographic amplification took place as a result of Cistercian inspiration is evidenced by the appearance of the same motifs in a special series of miniatures in the Trzebnica Psalter. According to K. Jażdżewski, a richly decorated prayer book for St Hedwig was made by the Cistercians from Lubiąż. A pictorial legend from 1353 describes with great precision the most important points of Cistercian spirituality, although the painter could also have been a lay person. Prince Ludwik I had numerous connections with the Cistercian monastery in Lubiąż. It can therefore be concluded that some important motifs of the pictorial life of St Hedwig comes from Cistercian inspiration.
