Abstract

Three biographies of Oleśnicki were written by Jan Długosz: a description in the "Catalog of Krakow Bishops", a biography published in "Annales" dated 1455 and a large biography of the bishop, published in "Annales" in the years 1410-1455. The image of Oleśnicki emerging from the pages of "Annals" has not been subject to separate research so far, so it will be the main purpose of the analysis. All these biographies have several common features: they aim to present the bishop's extraordinary personality and are written in accordance with the principles of rhetorical art. The biographies from the "Catalog of Krakow Bishops" show the figure of an ideal bishop - a defender of faith, the Church and the homeland. The biography included in the "Annals" under the year 1455 was designed in accordance with the principle of amplification. Długosz presented the Bishop of Krakow as a model of all virtues. However, this method was typical of the descriptions of deceased persons written by Długosz. When analyzing Długosz's message from 1410-1455, two spheres of Oleśnicki's activity emerge: ecclesiastical and political. Oleśnicki received the features of a spiritual guardian of the Polish Church and Kingdom, which was inextricably linked with the tradition of Saint. Stanisław, but at the same time it highlighted the merits, abilities and dedication of Oleśnicki himself. All these praises, in the context of the presented events, also served the apotheosis of the Krakow bishopric. Oleśnicki's political and ecclesiastical activities presented in Długosz's work differ qualitatively and quantitatively. Oleśnicki as a bishop was presented more broadly and with greater interest, but the information on politics is mainly factual. Political successes certainly benefited Oleśnicki's image, but they gave way to praise for his involvement in matters of faith and the Church.
