John Paul II Vatican Foundation House in Lublin in the years 1990–2014

Abstract

The John Paul II Pontifical Foundation in Rome was established on October 16, 1981 by papal decree as a non-profit organization, with the main goals of supporting educational, scientific, cultural, religious and charitable initiatives related to the pontificate of John Paul II. The foundation is headquartered in the Vatican.
One of the significant agencies and branches of the John Paul II Foundation in Poland is the Foundation House in Lublin. At the beginning of the 1990s, this House initiated a scholarship program for young people from the countries of the former Eastern Bloc.
At the request of Father Marian Radwan, accepted by John Paul II, construction of a dormitory for students from Eastern Europe in Lublin, a new home for the Foundation, was undertaken. The Connelly Foundation from Philadelphia provided assistance in implementing the project. The John Paul II Foundation House in Lublin was put into use in 1993, and the ceremonial consecration took place on October 13, 1994.
The scholarship fund is a very important field of activity of the Foundation today. Thanks to its scholarship activities, the John Paul II Foundation can now boast about a thousand graduates from the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin and the John Paul II Pontifical University in Krakow. The group of scholarship holders consists of students from the countries of the former USSR and the former communist bloc. The needs were great, because there was no shortage of young people willing to study at Catholic universities in Poland.
The Foundation’s scholarship program covers young people from the countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe (not belonging to the European Union). In this way, the Foundation wants to participate in the education of future Christian intellectual elites. Every year, about 140 people from about 10 countries use this form of academic scholarship for mostly full-time and doctoral studies in various fields. However, usually it is about 110 people from about 8 countries. Among them are also priests and nuns.
