The evolution of the image of women in a popular Russian and Soviet song

Abstract

This article considers the evolution of the image of women in popular Russian and Soviet songs. The author examines various Russian popular songs of different genres (folk, gypsy, pop, as well as Russian romance) composed over the last 100 years. Particular attention is paid to the Soviet period of Russian history, songs of the 1920s and 1930s, songs of the Second World War years, and post-war Soviet pop music. The hypothesis that the image of a Russian woman is due to temporary historical circumstances and has evolved towards a freer modern woman outside of social stereotypes and patriarchal prejudices is confirmed. The image of women remains unchanged in folklore and Russian romance – the idealized beloved.  This trend is broken in the Soviet era, where a new professional sphere of activity for women appears, which is associated with emancipation. The image of a woman in pop songs becomes more diverse, more extensive, and she is no longer only a beloved young girl, but also a loving woman, a mother.
