The article leans into the issue of frequent relocation in Carmelite monasteries. At a time when the vast majority of people were born and died in the same locality, the mobility of the Discalced Carmelites was astonishingly high. Relocation by Carmelites in the 17th or 18th century was as frequent as in the 20th century. The most common reason for the relocation of monks was the need to adapt the staffing of the monastery to the pastoral and monastic tasks it performed (e.g. the education of clerics); sometimes a monk had to be relocated for his spiritual welfare or also for disciplinary reasons. Relocations related to a commissioned office or duty were of a different nature.
