An unknown letter from Jędrzej Kitowicz against the Jesuits

Abstract

The article presents the opinion of one of the most famous pamphleteers of the Enlightenment, Jędrzej Kitowicz, on the dissolution of the Society of Jesus and the rescue of members of this order in Belarus. This opinion appears in a private letter from Kitowicz to the anonymous author of the Defense of the Belarusian Jesuits. Kitowicz criticizes the Defense and Belarusian members of the Society of Jesus based in Russia after 1773. At the same time, he tries to explain the position of Pope Clement XIV, who decided to liquidate the Jesuit order around the world. The text of the letter is only available in manuscript. Currently it is in the Archives of the Southern Poland Province of the Society of Jesus in Krakow.
