Abstract

The Cistercian monastery in Krzeszów is the last institution of this order in Silesia in the 13th century, founded in 1292, it is therefore necessary to mention, of course very briefly, the previous foundations of Cistercian monasteries in this land. The Cistercians came to Poland in the 13th century, and in the second half of the century, the first male order of theirs settled in Silesia in Lubiąż on the Oder. During the 13th century, they settled in three other Silesian towns: in Henryków, Kamieniec Ząbkowicki and Krzeszów, and in Trzebnica a nun of this order was founded. Thus, over a period of 130 years, 4 male Cistercian outposts and 1 female Cistercian outpost were established in Silesia, and they owed their existence to princely and knightly foundations. The purpose of this short article was to present only the very beginnings of the foundation of the Cistercian monastery in Krzeszów. Its further history from the 14th century onwards awaits detailed study. Work on this monastery was initiated by Henryk Dziurla in the monograph entitled "Krzeszów", but mainly on the architectural, sculptural and painting works of the Krzeszów team.
