Abstract

Anna of Silesia (1204-1265), wife of Henry II the Pious, like other pious daughters of princely families of the 13th century, represented the Franciscan type of holiness. In the University Library in Wrocław there is a codex from the 14th century, including: "Vita Annae ducissae Silesae". The original, unpreserved "Vita" was most likely written in the second half of the 13th century. Its author was an anonymous Franciscan monk from the Wrocław monastery, near the royal court. The work was commissioned by the Poor Clares, whose founder and patron was Anna. The nuns sought the canonization of the princess. However, since their cult was not widely developed, no official efforts in this direction were made. The only trace of the idea of canonization is the Latin "Vita Annae", which has little literary value. It's more like a registry of a princess's pious works. On the other hand, it is an irreplaceable source for learning about Anna's personality and, above all, the hagiographic work: Christocentric piety, strict asceticism, charitable activity and the compassionate nature of the princess's spirituality. For readers, "Vita" was proof of the holiness of its hero, it also played a didactic and moralizing role, encouraging people to live similarly and act in the spirit of evangelical love for God and neighbor. "Vita Annae" is undoubtedly another example of the presence and reception of Franciscan ideals among the Polish population in the Middle Ages.
