Abstract

The third National Scientific Symposium devoted to the history, artistic and intellectual culture of Polish Cistercians from the Middle Ages to the 18th century was held on September 27-30, 1993 in Poznań. It was an event organized by the Team for Research on the History and Culture of the Cistercians in Poland at the Institute of History of the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań. The subject of the symposium focused on the history, artistic and intellectual culture of Polish Cistercians from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. The symposium gathered Cistercian experts from various academic centers in Poland and numerous younger scientists. The papers were grouped thematically, starting with the broadly understood issues of Cistercian foundations in Poland, Cistercian intellectual culture and spirituality, and ending with musical culture, art history and archaeological and architectural research on Cistercian monastic communities. Important presentations included: the history of the Cistercian order in Silesia, their educational policy, memorial tradition, the life of Saint Christian - Cistercian missionary bishop of Prussia, and interesting archival materials about the Cistercians. The proceedings also included biographical, political and social issues related to the Cistercians. Topics related to the relations between the Cistercians and other orders, their role in the political and religious life of the country were discussed, and Cistercian foundations in various regions of Poland were discussed in detail. The last day of the meeting was devoted to musical culture, art history and the presentation of the results of archaeological and architectural research of Cistercian monastic communities. The symposium was a rich source of new findings and reflections on the history, artistic and intellectual culture of Polish Cistercians from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the exhibition and take a scientific trip on the Poznań-Ląd-Gniezno route.
