The Polish legislator in the Penal Code of June 6, 1997 introduces direct, individual protection of life, bodily integrity and the honour of the President of the Republic of Poland. Pursuant to Art. 134 of the Penal Code, an attempt on the life of the President of the Republic of Poland is punishable by imprisonment from 12 to 15 years, imprisonment for 25 years and life imprisonment. In Art. 135 of the Penal Code, the legislator criminalises two further acts directed against the President of Poland: committing an active assault (§ 1) and public insult (§ 2). The regulations concerning the protection of the President of the Republic of Poland adopted in the Penal Code of 1997 refer to the Polish traditions from before World War II, when the Codification Commission adopted the model of protection of the head of state as an entity embodying the Majesty of the Republic. The President of the Republic is protected as the supreme representative of the Republic of Poland and the guarantor of the continuity of State authority (Art. 126 para. 1 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland).
