The responsibility of the Christian faithful for the material needs of the Church is a duty codified in can. 222 § 1 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law. The Christian faithful are obliged to assist with the needs of the Church so that the Church has what necessary for divine worship, for apostolic works and works of charity and for the decent sustenance of ministers. The basis of responsibility of Christian faithful is also moral norm having its source in the divine law. The scope of this norm may be shaped by the ecclesiastical legislator if he takes into account circumstances of time and place in which this norm would apply.
