The aim of this publication is to answer the question of what are the roots of the geopolitical thinking of the current NATO decision-making centres with regard to the GIUK area and how this influences the current strategic thinking of the alliance. The author
also addresses the issue of the current defence policy of NATO allies that are directly involved in the structure of the GIUK area. The author also attempts to draw attention to the threats that may await NATO in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions in connection
with the Russian Federation’s imperatives regarding the Arctic and the resurgent power of the People’s Republic of China, which is actively interested in gaining a foothold in the Arctic.
