The article presents a discussion of the origins of the church of St. Lawrence in Gniezno. The following issues have been discussed: a settlement in which the temple was built, the oldest texts about the church and the genesis of the temple. At the end the name of the church is presented. Parish church of St. Wawrzyniec played an important role in the sacred space of the medieval Gniezno agglomeration, providing pastoral service to the people living in the settlements located south of the Panieńskie Hill. The temple was founded in the second half of the 13th century at the latest, but placing its origins in the early Middle Ages (10th-11th centuries) seems unjustified.
