Over the years, the Canons Regular have contributed immensely to the development of science and Latin culture in Europe. The canons arrived in Poland in the 11th century from the north of France and Belgium, from powerful centers owned by the Abbey of Arrouaise. The Canons Regular founded the first monasteries on Mount Ślęża near Wrocław, then in Trzemeszno and Czerwińsk. They combined their specific way of life mainly with pastoral activity. They founded cultural and intellectual centers, and promoted spiritual regeneration connected with the new trend of devotion, described as “devotio moderna”. In addition, they founded and ran schools, which were very popular with the society. The basic aim of the present study is to present the educational activity of this order in Silesia, especially in the modern era. The development of educational system is presented in the context of the period of life and work of the greatest educational reformer – the abbot of the monastery of Żagań Jan Ignacy Melchior von Felbiger. In addition, the complex situation and issues of the ecclesiastical education in Silesia on the threshold of modern times are illustrated. The educational system and teaching methods applied by the Canons Regular in Silesian convents are also considered, mainly in the context of adopted reforms, especially those created by the mentioned prelate Jan Felbiger.
