Abstract

Baroque altar with the painting "The Rapture of St. Francis” is located in the chapel dedicated to the same saint in the church of o. Bernardine in Leżajsk. The high artistic level of the canvas, which distinguishes it among the paintings of the Leżajsk temple, aroused widespread interest. However, this image was subject to cursory analysis by a narrow circle of researchers. The composition "The Delight of St. Francis” may be considered a synthesis of post-Tridentine images of this saint. It is a kind of summary of the historical and mystical iconographic themes of prayer, stigmatization and ecstatic states of Saint. Francis created as a perfect model of Christ. Presentation of Saint Francis is a typical Seghers approach to states of mystical enchantment. He was the author of popular images of the visions of saints at that time, in particular Teresa of Avila and Francis Xavier. The most valuable painting object of the Leżajsk church. Bernardynów - painting "The Delight of St. Francis" - seems to be the only work in Poland by the Flemish painter Gerard Seghers. It is also one of the few examples of paintings by the Caravaggionists of the Neapolitan school. The expression and subtlety of the means of expression combined with the extensive mystical character of the presentation determine the specific Italian-Flemish atmosphere of the painting.
