Polish religious songs in handwritten and printed sources

Abstract

The article presents the research results of work conducted in the years 1970-1985 as part of a seminar conducted by Fr. prof. dr hab. Karol Mrowiec CM at the Institute of Musicology of the Catholic University of Lublin. The research focused on two main thematic areas: the history of Catholic church songs with Polish texts and the issues of religious works, especially Old Polish ones. Fr. Prof. K. Mrowiec was the initiator of research on these two areas, which are interconnected. Research on Polish Catholic cantional songs was a pioneering undertaking on a nationwide scale, especially taking into account Polish texts. The aim of the article is to present the results of research on the first of these areas, which made a significant contribution to research on the history of Polish cantional songs. In the years 1970-1985, 30 works were written, including one doctoral thesis, which can be organized into three thematic groups. The article, being informative, presents a concise picture of the issues of Polish Catholic songs documented in handwritten and printed sources over nearly four centuries. These studies have brought interesting and often revealing results, revealing previously unknown aspects of the history of Polish religious songs, especially from the 17th, 18th and 20th centuries. They collect rich documentation describing various aspects of the development of church song in Poland and enabling directions for further research in this field.
