Wayside chapels and crosses, and especially their form and ornaments, were one of the first objects to attract the attention of both amateur and professional students of folk culture. The wayside chapels come in all shapes and forms, from more or less accurate imitations of existing churches and their distinct stylistic features to architectural fantasias based on bizarre recombinations of high styles and conventions. As far as their architectural form is concerned all wayside chapels can be divided into six basic categories: chapel houses, chest chapels, pillar chapels, pedestal chapels, lantern chapels and niche chapels.
