Abstract

This article aims at familiarizing the readers with one of the biometric technologies – iris recognition of the human eye, which may be used in future to develop automatic identification methods used in forensic science. Concept of iris of the eye was originally developed for access control systems. At present, after solving a lot of technical problems, research work are continued to put this technology into many different areas of people activities connected with security, where scientists are looking for reliable way to identify people by unique physical features, and where the standard is a zero error rate. This publication is a summary of knowledge about the theoretical possibility of using this biometric method in the Polish forensic science with examples of practical use of this technology, in another countries used for security, and as automated biometric identification systems. In conclusion worth to emphasize fact, that current results and experiences in the use of iris of the human eye put this biometric technology to authenticate identity at the forefront of the available methods for use in identification or verification modes, in addition to DNA testing, and fingerprints.
