Abstract
This paper has analysed the structure, place and significance of theological themes in the Book of Jeremiah. The text reveals the complex composition of the book, which consists of layers of lyrical and prose layers, as well as prophecies, biographical elements, and numerous Deuteronomistic contexts. The author paid particular attention to the theological depth characteristic of the thought of the prophet Jeremiah, i.e. topics such as man’s relationship with God, worship, sin, the New Covenant and messianism.
With regard to the structure of the Book of Jeremiah, it should be noted that it contains various textual genres: poetic prophecies (source A), biographical narratives (source B), and deuteronomistic sermons (source C). Various scholars (L. Stachowiak, J. Lemański, G. Witaszek) propose various structural divisions. What becomes apparent in most of their analyses is the deep relationship between the prophet’s biography and his mission.
With regard to the place the book occupies in the context of the whole Bible and its significance for the NT, it should be noted that it definitely stands out among the prophetic texts of the ST. In contrast, in the NT there are few but significant references to Jeremiah (mainly in Mt, Lk, Heb). Let us add that a very significant quotation from: Jer 31:31-34 concerning the New Covenant, is referred to in Heb 8:8-12.
Finally, it is worth noting the specific theological themes embedded in the analysed book. These are: Man’s relationship with Yahweh God (which is to be personal, dialogical, based on covenant and trust); sin resulting from deviation from God’s norms (the prophet stigmatises idolatry, injustice and religious formalism); worship and the temple (Jeremiah criticises rituals that do not result in a change of heart); the marriage metaphor (God as the Bridegroom, Israel as unfaithful wife - image of unfaithfulness and hope for forgiveness); The New Covenant (foreshadowing the renewal of God’s relationship with man through the law inscribed in the the depths of the heart, a messianic announcement); messianism (the prophetic vision of a righteous king from the line of David, which would later be realised in Jesus of Nazareth).
