Origin and early development of celibacy between the 4th and 6th centurie

Abstract

The article addresses the issue of the emergence of celibacy among clergy, pointing at the early development of this practice in the Church. It is divided into three thematic sections, covering in turn the first three centuries of the development of ecclesiastical legislation concerning sexual abstinence of clergy. The text attempts to present the synodal and papal decisions on the subject at that time, which also allows us to see the theology of celibacy of the clergy.
