This article presents the topicality of Antoni Furdal's open linguistics based on sociolinguistic research on the Macedonian language. The author of the text emphasizes that language is an element of culture and arises in the social life, that is why it often depends on various characteristics of society. Therefore, an accurate description of the structure of the language used in everyday life by a certain group of inhabitants is not possible without reference to their culture, traditions or social diversity. The linguistic-only approach does not exhaust the whole issue and cannot be used alone in the conducted research. Language is an important element of social interaction, and the contemporary understanding of linguistics assumes its interdisciplinarity. Therefore, close cooperation between sociology and linguistics in research on the contemporary Macedonian language is indispensable. The boundaries existing between the disciplines involved in the study of language are fluid, which proves the validity of Antoni Furdal’s thesis on the openness of linguistics.
