Abstract

It was generally accepted that the second part of the Foundation Book of the Henrykowski Abbey was written by the Henrykowski monk, who did not hold any office and hid his identity behind the words "ego minimus fratrum". This quotation from Holy Scripture (Luke 9:48) suggests an undeclared high rank rather than a truly low status of the writer. A mysterious signature of the same type ("ego minimus de ordine fratrum praedicatorum") was used by Gillelmus Peraldus, widely known for his preaching, in his book Summavirtutum. Since a copy of this popular treatise was on the shelf of the monastery library, it is quite probable that the author of the second part of the Foundation Book of Henryków Abbey noticed this formulation there and adapted it for himself. The second part of the Foundation Book of Henryków Abbey was created after 1310. Its author had in-depth knowledge of the economic situation and legal titles of individual monastic estates, apparently he must have stayed in the monastery for a long time and held positions that allowed him to acquire so much knowledge. No other person fits this role better than Abbot Peter II. It was probably Peter II who undertook to complete the Foundation Book of the Henryków Abbey after resigning from the position of abbot in the second half of 1309 (he was succeeded by Ulrich of Lubiąż). There is no certainty as to the day and year of his death. It is possible that this took place after 1311 on November 5. The uncertainty results from the fact that the death was entered in the Henryków death register much later. It is highly unlikely that such negligence would occur in connection with the death of an acting abbot, but is more likely in the case of a rank-and-file monk.
