Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the content, meaning, and evolution of the idea of progress, portraying it as one of the key foundations of European culture. It traces the philosophical roots of this idea – from the Christian conception of linear time, through Enlightenment rationalism, to the nineteenth-century systems of Comte, Spencer, and Mill. The text also discusses the critique of the idea of progress, particularly in relation to the problem of the subject of history and axiological relativism. However, the author emphasizes that despite its loss of original brilliance, the idea of progress remains an essential element of European identity, defining the dynamism and adaptability of its civilization. In this context, progress can be understood as a global effort to minimize evil and threats to humanity, with humankind itself emerging as the “super-subject” of history.
