Language as an important factor in the formation of German national identity in the 19th century: Język jako istotny aspekt kształtowania tożsamości narodowej w XIX w.

Abstract

In this article we will deal with the problem of the relationship between the language and moulding national identity of citizens using the example of the Jahnovian language of gymnastics in the 19th century in German. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn endeavoured in many ways to enrich and purify the German language as an expression of national consciousness. We will focus on the role of gymnastic language as the main nation-forming factor in the process of building civic attitudes, deepening national awareness
