Abstract

This article concerned with the process of liquidation of Catholic schools, homes, hospitals and charities in the People's Republic of Poland between 1958 and 1963. The communist clampdown on all Catholic establishments with utilitarian functions especially those run by religious orders, took place under Władysław Gomułka (the was Secretary General of the Polish Workers' Party in 1943-1948 and First Secretary the polish United Workers' Party in 1956-1970). It followed an earlier wave of closures during the Stalinist 'winter' of 1947-1956, when many of the church-sponsored institutions that had been revived in 1944-1947 after the ravages of the German and Russian occupation were forced into liquidation. The brief 'thaw' of 1956-1958 ended in a second wave of closures, which lasted for five years. The revival of the para-ecclesiastical establishments did not come until 1989 when the communists had to give up some of their power. The methods, strategy and tactics of the 1958-1963 clampdown mirrored the policies of the Stalinist times. The plan seems to have been masterminded from Moscow, where, under Nikita Khrushchev, a similar, ruthless campaign was launched with the aim of purging the USSR from religious institutions. In this article the church-related establishments affected by the clampdown are divided into categories reflecting their ownership status and functions within the structures of the Church in Poland. They are as follows: 1. Establishments of the state-controlled Catholic Association Caritas; 2. Establishments run by religious orders; and 3. Lower seminaries run by individual dioceses and religious orders. The following Tables reveal the extent of the closures: 1. Kindergartens run by Caritas in 1959; 2. Institutions run by Caritas in 1963; 3. Alumni of the first year in diocesan Higher Seminaries in 1945-1970; 4. Schools run by religious orders 1947-1978 and a graph showing changes in the number of schools run by religious orders in 1947-1978. The Appendix lists the signatures of hitherto inaccessible sources on religious orders and lay institutions from the archives of the state security services (Urząd Bezpieczeństwa, 1944-1956, and Służba Bezpieczeństwa, 1956-1990).
