Abstract

The documents presented in the study come from the Central Archives of the Society of Jesus in Rome (Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu), specifically from the branch of the Lithuanian province. These documents were included in a volume containing the history of individual Jesuit colleges from 1685-1689, with continuous page numbering. Mikołaj Narmunt, professor of theology at Vilnius University and current chaplain of the Lithuanian embassy, describes in detail his activities with his companion in Moscow over the course of three months. These activities include primarily confession, sermons, service to the sick, theological debates and conversations with monks. One particular theological debate is discussed in detail. Provincial Grzegorz Schill explains the organization of the Moscow mission and encloses Narmunt's letter describing the farewell in Moscow. The Czech Jesuit George David tells the story of the Moscow Coup: Peter's seizure of power and the removal of the previous rulers, Sophia and Golitsyn. He then describes in detail the expulsion of the Jesuits from Moscow, trying to identify the initiators. These first-hand accounts, written by those directly involved, shed light on the actions of the Jesuits and the thinking of both Jesuits and Russians, revealing their methods of operation.
