Father Tadeusz Gocáowski was born in 1931 in Piski, Masovia. After graduating from primary school, he continued his education at the Private Junior High School and Secondary School of the Missionary Fathers in Krakow, where he received his secondary school leaving certificate in 1951. Then he joined the Congregation of Missionary Priests, gaining philosophical and theological education in Krakow. After ordination as a priest, he studied canon law at the Catholic University of Lublin, obtaining a bachelor's degree in 1959. He worked as a lecturer and held various positions at the diocesan seminary in Gdańsk-Oliwa, and then was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Gdańsk diocese in 1983. After the death of Bishop Kaczmarek, he served as the administrator of the diocese, and then was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Gdańsk by Pope John Paul II in 1984. In 1992, he was elevated to the dignity of archbishop and metropolitan. He actively participated in the life of the Church and society, supporting, among others: NSZZ "Solidarność" and the Work of the New Millennium Foundation. He died in 2016, and his funeral took place with the participation of the Polish Episcopate and was presided over by the Metropolitan of Gdańsk.
