Abstract

Running a school was one of the pastoral duties of every parish. The parish schools in the diocese of Przemyśl developed their activities for almost four hundred years. They played an important role in the religious and social life of the diocese. The article tries to give an overview of the activities of the parish schools in the years 1637-1757 on the basis of the bishop's visitations. It discusses the beginnings of education and reconstructs the network of parish schools in the diocese. Teachers and pupils are characterised, the purpose and curriculum are described, and the school buildings are described.
