Abstract

The article presents a short history of the Theological Convent that existed at the University of Warsaw in 1918-1939. It was founded on January 17, 1918 by Cardinal A. Kakowski, who entrusted its management to the Congregation of the Mission. Missionaries who came to Warsaw for this task were assigned to the Church of the Holy Cross. The article begins with a discussion of the purpose and functioning of convents, i.e. centers intended to support the intellectual and spiritual formation of priests studying at universities. These general remarks constitute the background for the history of the Theological Seminary at the University of Warsaw. "Theologicum", as it came to be called, was a place of various high-ranking meetings and conferences, a place where scientists from Poland and abroad presented their ideas and research results to an open and very demanding audience. The article does not ignore the difficult problem of ownership of the building in which Convent was located. Historically, it was the property of the Congregation of the Mission, confiscated by the Russian authorities after the liquidation of the Warsaw province of the Congregation. It was supposed to be restored to the Congregation in 1918, but for various reasons this did not happen. For the next twenty years, the missionaries were only administrators of the building, which meant they had to deal with major problems in running the facility. Over two decades, over 200 priests have registered at the Theological Convent. Some of them were later elevated to the highest positions in the Catholic Church.
