Abstract

In 1998, the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Cistercian Order was celebrated, which became an impulse to organize jubilee celebrations in Europe and around the world. In Poland, preparations to celebrate this anniversary have been going on since 1996. The anniversary celebrations included various events such as masses, scientific conferences and other cultural events. As part of these celebrations, an International Scientific Conference was held at the Cistercian Abbey in Kraków-Mogiła, which lasted from October 5 to 10, 1998. It was attended by scientists from various disciplines who discussed the life and activities of Cistercians in Central European society. This conference was the fourth meeting of researchers dealing with Cistercian issues. The previous ones took place in 1985, 1987 and 1993. During the conference, various aspects of the life and activities of the Cistercians were discussed, both in the Middle Ages and in the 19th and 20th centuries. Scientific presentations included, among others: the history of Cistercian monasteries, their influence on the culture of the region and the everyday life of the monks. These were interdisciplinary discussions that allowed for a better understanding of many issues related to the activity of the order. The Mogila conference and related publications constituted a significant contribution to the knowledge of the cultural achievements of the Cistercian Order. The participants also had the opportunity to experience the tradition and monastic life of the monastery where the meeting was held, which further enriched their experience.
