In the 19th century, sixteen Catholic churches were built in Warsaw. Ten of them were inspired by Italian architectural monuments, and for some time local architects had a virtual monopoly on designing more important - not only religious - buildings. The influx of Italian artists stopped in the middle of the century, but Polish artists also preferred to use the patterns they had initiated. The list of churches was prepared according to stylistic and chronological standards. Only two of the churches in question survived intact, avoiding major losses in the last war.
