The history of the Carmelite monastery in Bydgoszcz still remains poorly known and researched. There is a lack of reliable studies on this topic, except for the question of the time of the foundation of the monastery and the identity of the founder. Many speculations concern the original founder, suggesting that it could have been both the royal starosta and the burghers of Bydgoszcz. One of the arguments for the bourgeois character of the foundation is the donation from Bydgoszcz citizens, which was confirmed by papal confirmation. There are also records of the establishment of the monastery in 1398, although the first certain information comes only from 1408. There are also documents, including a copy from 1839, which may be the oldest known source regarding the history of this monastery. Despite the lack of clear sources, there are indications of the bourgeois origin of the foundation of the Bydgoszcz Carmelites. However, there is no full certainty as to the identity of the founder and the exact date of foundation, which remains the subject of further research. It is known, however, that the monastery was not founded thanks to the personal actions of the mayor or the support of the king.
